Easter its such an amazing time of the year!
A time to spend quality time with friends and family! Who else gets as excited as me for when the fluffy bunny arrives? It’s one of my most favourite holidays but it’s also equally as important to keep the planet in mind. The over indulging which equals to additional food waste and the amount of precious fuels and energy to create it all has an expense at mother natures cost. The pressure’s of such a big holiday can lead people to make additional and unnecessary consumer choices.
Did you know that in Australia alone over 210 million dollars is spent on chocolate alone for Easter? Crazy right. The least we can do is make our Easter’s more eco friendly but still create lots of memories and endless smiles whilst doing it.
I’ve put together a few tips that may help you navigate around the Easter period that i’ve used in previous years. It also can be quite cost effective for those that are trying to save some cash this holiday.
Chocolate.
I know its the basis of Easter but if you look for organic, fair trade or palm oil free chocolate this will make a massive difference. And don’t worry it still tastes equally as amazing! The kids won’t even notice the difference especially as the Easter bunny would have just arrived. One of my personal favourites is Organic Times, made in Australia and deliciously good. https://www.organictimes.com.au/organic-easter/
Packaging And Toys.
Choose packaging that is (or almost) from recycled materials or is recyclable. Try to avoid things like plastic covered Easter bunny chocolates that you see at generic check out stores, these are designed to get you at the last minute of checkout or in a panic buy. Don’t purchase fluffy toys, small plastic eggs and toys that will honestly not last longer than then the long weekend period. These honestly end of up in landfill almost a month or less later.
Get Creative.
Use real eggs (put a small hole up the top and drain prior to use so that you can utilise the whole egg) and get some natural food die. These can be used as a creative DIY activity with the kids to create their own Easter egg designs or they can be used for an egg hunt. Running a competition to the the children competitive and involved is another trick you can utilise.
Utilising previous egg collecting baskets from previous years or getting the kids to make their own paper baskets with their own personalised touch with some craft activities is another way to stop over consuming and purchasing unnecessary landfill items.
Decorations really set the spirit of Easter, having them around the home really sets the mood and excitement for the children (and grown adults like myself) but let’s make them more sustainable by either reusing or purchasing recyclable items. It’s so much fun to take the time out, slow down the stress of the holiday and be present with creating decorations. No one ever remembers the Easter bunting when they were a child but your parents more than likely have kept something you created from Easter that to be honest you probably laugh back on now.
Enjoy!
Most importantly enjoy this time with your loved ones. It really is a gorgeous time of year. Enjoy precious moments around the BBQ, the sun on your skin, quiet nights in your Easter pj’s or however you wish to spend your Easter this year. It is so important that we reconnect and start to show love and compassion not only to Mother Earth but to each other too. We’ve all been through a lot, so let’s be kind.
Happy Easter Green Catcher family, from me to you xxx
